Os advérbios interrogativos introduzem perguntas sobre pessoa, lugar, tempo, modo, causa ou razão. Eles ajudam a localizar a informação que falta na frase e aparecem tanto em perguntas diretas quanto em perguntas indiretas. Em português, eles não variam em gênero nem em número, e sua interpretação depende da função que exercem na oração.
Interrogative adverbs introduce questions about person, place, time, manner, cause or reason. They help locate the missing information in the sentence and appear in both direct and indirect questions. In Portuguese, they do not vary in gender or number, and their interpretation depends on the function they perform in the clause.

Quem pergunta por pessoas e pode funcionar como sujeito ou objeto da oração. Who asks about people and can function as subject or object of the clause. Causa e RazãoCause and Reason
Por que, por quê, porque e porquê pertencem ao mesmo campo de causa e explicação, mas ocupam posições e funções diferentes na frase. Por que aparece sobretudo no início da pergunta ou em perguntas indiretas; por quê surge no fim da pergunta; porque introduz a resposta ou a explicação; porquê funciona como substantivo. A escolha correta depende da estrutura da frase e é uma área de alta frequência de confusão na escrita e na fala.
Why, por quê, because and porquê belong to the same field of cause and explanation, but occupy different positions and functions in the sentence. Por que appears mainly at the beginning of the question or in indirect questions; por quê appears at the end of the question; because introduces the answer or explanation; porquê functions as a noun. The correct choice depends on the sentence structure and is a high-frequency area of confusion in writing and speaking.

Posição e OrdemPosition and Order
Em perguntas diretas, o advérbio interrogativo geralmente vem no início da oração para marcar a abertura da pergunta. Quando está regido por preposição, a preposição pode preceder o advérbio, como em de onde, em que ou para onde, conforme a exigência sintática da frase. Em perguntas indiretas, o advérbio aparece dentro de uma oração subordinada, como em Pergunto quando chega, sem a entonação típica da pergunta direta.
In direct questions, the interrogative adverb usually comes at the beginning of the sentence to mark the opening of the question. When it is governed by a preposition, the preposition can precede the adverb, as in de onde, em que or para onde, according to the syntactic requirement of the sentence. In indirect questions, the adverb appears inside the subordinate clause, as in I ask when it arrives, without the typical intonation of a direct question.

Their value depends on their position in the sentence, the presence of a preposition, and the difference between direct and indirect questions.
