What Adverbs Express
Adverbs of place indicate location, proximity, distance or position in space. They answer questions such as ¿dónde?, ¿a dónde? or ¿de dónde?, and situate an action or a thing without expressing movement by themselves. In The book is arriba, arriba indicates position. In They arrived late, there is no spatial reference. If you change or remove the adverb, the information about place disappears. To see how they combine with other words of relation, it is useful to connect them with Adverbs and Prepositions.
Aquí, acá and ahí
Aquí and acá indicate proximity to the speaker. Aquí is usually used for an exact location, as in I am aquí, while acá sounds more flexible and appears often in several countries, as in Come acá. Ahí indicates a position near the listener or a place that has already been mentioned, as in Your backpack is ahí or Leave it ahí. In a sentence such as Put the glass aquí, the word marks the precise point where the glass should remain. For a complete spatial reference in everyday contexts, these forms often appear together with the expressions later used in Phrases of Location and Directionality.
| Region | Variant | Definition | Example | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| aquí | Aquí is used to point out a location very close to the speaker and is the most neutral form in general speech. | Aquí tengo las llaves sobre la mesa. Here I have the keys on the table. | ||
| acá | Acá is used in everyday conversation to indicate closeness to the speaker and usually sounds more colloquial than aquí. | Ven acá un momento y mira esto.Come here for a moment and look at this. | ||
| ahí | Ahí is used to point out a location close to the listener or a place already mentioned in the conversation. | Deja el vaso ahí junto a la ventana.Leave the glass there next to the window. |

Allí and allá
Allí and allá indicate distance from both the speaker and the listener. Allí usually presents a defined place, as in The pharmacy is allí, at the end of the street. Allá is more general and less precise, as in He lives allá, in another neighborhood. Both forms place something far away, but allá leaves the point more open or broader. In a spatial description, these words help move the gaze toward distant areas, and that is why they frequently appear in Spatial Descriptions.
| Region | Variant | Definition | Example | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| allí | Allí is used to indicate a moderate distance or a place that is not near the speaker. | La farmacia está allí frente a la plaza. The pharmacy is there across from the square. | ||
| allá | Allá is used to point out a distant place in a more general and less precise way than allí. | Mis amigos viven allá en la costa. My friends live over there on the coast. | ||
| allí | Allí is used when one wants to talk about a distant place with some spatial precision. | El museo queda allí al final de la avenida. The museum is there at the end of the avenue. |
Cerca de and lejos de
Cerca de and lejos de form expressions that are widely used to locate something in relation to another reference. Cerca de indicates a short distance, as in The hospital is cerca de the plaza. Lejos de indicates a great distance, as in The station is far from my house. The structure is adverb + de + reference, and that reference may be a noun, a pronoun or an idea that is clear in the conversation. In We are cerca de the beach, the beach functions as the point of reference. In The store is lejos de here, the reference is the place where the person is speaking. These expressions are key when the location depends on another point, not just on space in general.

Encima, debajo and alrededor
Basic spatial relationships are expressed with adverbs such as encima, debajo, delante, detrás, dentro, fuera, alrededor, enfrente and junto. The glass is encima de the table places an object in the upper part. The backpack is debajo de the chair places it in the lower part. Delante and detrás arrange elements by front or rear position. Dentro and fuera mark the interior and exterior. Alrededor indicates the area surrounding something, as in There are trees alrededor de the house. Enfrente presents an opposite or frontal position, and junto expresses proximity, as in The bench is junto a the door. These forms usually appear with a reference introduced by de or a, depending on the expression: encima de, debajo de, enfrente de, junto a. In a scene or physical description, they are the words that arrange objects in space and then allow you to construct Spatial Descriptions.

Position in the Sentence
These adverbs usually go near the verb or at the end of the sentence. I am aquí and I am going allá show the most common position. They can also appear at the beginning to give greater emphasis to the place: Aquí my grandmother lives. When the adverb goes at the beginning, the location becomes the center of the information; when it goes at the end, it sounds more natural as a complement of the verb. In a sentence such as I left the keys encima, the adverb closes the idea and makes it clear where the object was left. If a reference with de or a is added, the complete group usually stays together: The dog is debajo de the table, He sat junto a me. Placement changes the focus, but does not change the basic spatial meaning.
| Usage | Explanation | |
|---|---|---|
| It is placed near the verb when one wants to indicate the place of the action without highlighting the location. | ||
| It is placed at the end when the spatial information serves as a natural closing for the sentence. | ||
| It is placed at the beginning to give more importance to the place in the main idea. |
Dónde, adónde and de dónde
Dónde asks or answers about location: ¿Dónde is the phone? It is in the kitchen. Adónde asks or answers about destination, that is, toward which place someone or something is going: ¿Adónde are you going? I am going to the doctor. De dónde asks or answers about origin: ¿De dónde are you coming? I am coming from home. The difference depends on the spatial idea one wants to express. Dónde indicates a point or a situation; adónde indicates direction; de dónde indicates provenance. In short answers, the verb and the preposition complete the meaning: Aquí, allá, to the office, from Madrid. In questions and answers, these forms connect directly with the use that later appears in Phrases of Location and Directionality.
| Usage | Explanation | |
|---|---|---|
| Dónde is used to ask or answer about a static place. | ||
| Adónde is used to ask or answer about the place someone is going to. | ||
| De dónde is used to ask or answer about the place of origin. |
Invariable Adverbs
Adverbs of place do not change in gender or number. Aquí has no masculine or feminine, singular or plural form; it is used the same way with any noun. One says the chair is allí and also the books are allí. The adverb modifies the verb, an adjective or the entire sentence, but it does not agree with the noun as adjectives do. That is why aquía or aquíos do not exist. Its form remains fixed, and this stability makes it easy to recognize in any context: I live cerca, it is lejos, put it encima, it stayed dentro.
