Qué son

Los homófonos son palabras que suenan igual y se escriben de forma distinta, como hola y ola. También hay palabras confusas que no siempre suenan exactamente igual en todas las regiones, pero se mezclan por la pronunciación rápida o por una diferencia ortográfica pequeña. Para elegir bien, hay que mirar el significado, la función en la frase y, a veces, la variedad regional del español.

Homophones are words that sound the same and are written differently, like hola and ola. There are also confusing words that do not always sound exactly the same in all regions, but they mix due to rapid pronunciation or a small spelling difference. To choose correctly, you must look at the meaning, the function in the sentence, and, sometimes, the regional variety of Spanish.

Muchos homófonos se distinguen porque cada palabra pertenece a un campo de significado diferente. Aunque el sonido sea igual, la escritura correcta depende de la idea que se quiere expresar. En estos casos, el contexto de la frase suele resolver la duda.

Many homophones are distinguished because each word belongs to a different semantic field. Although the sound is the same, the correct spelling depends on the idea you want to express. In these cases, the context of the sentence usually resolves the doubt.

Por función

Otras palabras se confunden porque tienen sonidos iguales o muy parecidos, pero cumplen funciones distintas en la oración. Una puede ser verbo, otra preposición y otra nombre. Identificar la función gramatical ayuda a escoger la forma escrita correcta.

Other words are confused because they have identical or very similar sounds, but they serve different grammatical roles in the sentence. One can be a verb, another a preposition, and another a noun. Identifying the grammatical function helps to choose the correct written form.
