Qué es

Un verbo con cambio de raíz cambia una vocal en la parte principal del verbo cuando se conjuga. Este cambio no modifica la terminación, solo la vocal de la raíz. En este tema, los cambios más comunes son e a ie, o a ue y e a i.

A stem-changing verb changes a vowel in the main part of the verb when it is conjugated. This change does not modify the ending, only the vowel in the stem. In this topic, the most common changes are e to ie, o to ue, and e to i.

Patrón e ie

En algunos verbos, la vocal e de la raíz cambia a ie en el presente de indicativo. El infinitivo mantiene la forma original. La terminación del verbo sigue las reglas normales de los verbos en ar, er o ir.

In some verbs, the vowel e in the stem changes to ie in the present indicative. The infinitive retains its original form. The ending of the verb follows the normal rules for -ar, -er, or -ir verbs.

Patrón o ue

En otros verbos, la vocal o de la raíz cambia a ue en el presente de indicativo. El cambio está en la raíz y no en la terminación. Este patrón aparece en muchos verbos frecuentes.

In other verbs, the vowel o in the stem changes to ue in the present indicative. The change is in the stem, not in the ending. This pattern appears in many common verbs.

Patrón e i

Algunos verbos cambian e a i en el presente de indicativo. Este grupo es común en varios verbos terminados en ir. El cambio afecta la raíz y las terminaciones siguen siendo las del presente.

Some verbs change e to i in the present indicative. This group is common among several verbs ending in -ir. The change affects the stem and the endings remain the same as the present.

Personas

En el presente de indicativo, el cambio de raíz aparece en yo, tú, él, ella, usted, ellos, ellas y ustedes. No aparece en nosotros ni vosotros. Por eso, un mismo verbo tiene formas con cambio y formas sin cambio en el mismo tiempo verbal.

In the present indicative, the stem change appears in I, you (singular informal), he, she, you (formal), they, and you all. It does not appear in we or you all. Therefore, the same verb has forms with change and forms without change in the same verb tense.
