Valor consecutivo

Las conjunciones consecutivas introducen una consecuencia, un efecto o un resultado de lo dicho antes. No expresan la causa misma, sino lo que ocurre a partir de ella. En español, este valor puede aparecer con conectores claramente consecutivos y con estructuras de intensidad que llevan después una consecuencia. En algunos usos, el límite con conectores de conclusión o de causa no siempre es totalmente fijo.

Consecutive conjunctions introduce a consequence, an effect, or an outcome of what was said before. They do not express the cause itself, but what happens as a result of it. In Spanish, this value can appear with clearly consecutive connectors and with intensity structures that carry a consequence afterward. In some uses, the boundary with conclusion or causal connectors is not always fully fixed.

Conectores básicos

Intensidad previa

También hay estructuras consecutivas en dos partes. La primera expresa grado o intensidad, y la segunda introduce la consecuencia. Este patrón aparece con elementos como tan, tanto, tal y un o una cantidad, seguidos de que. La relación es de resultado: la intensidad es tan alta que produce un efecto.

There are also two-part consecutive structures. The first expresses a degree or intensity, and the second introduces the consequence. This pattern appears with elements such as tan, tanto, tal, and a quantity, followed by que. The relation is one of consequence: the intensity is so high that it produces an effect.

Que e infinitivo

Con muchas estructuras consecutivas, la consecuencia aparece en una oración introducida por que. En otros casos, especialmente con intensidad y mismo sujeto, puede aparecer un infinitivo en lugar de una oración completa. La elección depende del conector y de la estructura disponible, no solo del significado. Algunas combinaciones son más frecuentes que otras según el uso real.

With many consecutive structures, the consequence appears in a sentence introduced by 'que'. In other cases, especially with intensity and same subject, an infinitive may appear instead of a complete sentence. The choice depends on the connector and the available structure, not only on the meaning. Some combinations are more frequent than others depending on actual use.

Esta diferencia no siempre se explica solo por la idea de consecuencia, sino también por el tipo de conector. Por eso conviene aprender cada estructura con su modo más habitual.

Many consecutive conjunctions take the indicative because they present a result considered real or effective. However, some expressions, like 'de ahí que', tend to take the subjunctive because they introduce a consequence interpreted or deduced. This difference is not always explained only by the idea of consequence, but also by the type of connector. Therefore, it's advisable to learn each structure with its most habitual mood.

La coma

La puntuación ayuda a marcar la relación consecutiva. Cuando el conector enlaza dos oraciones ya desarrolladas, es frecuente escribir coma antes del conector. En estructuras fijas de intensidad como tan... que, normalmente no se separan las dos partes con coma. La presencia de coma también puede variar según la longitud de la oración y el estilo del texto.

Punctuation helps mark the consecutive relationship. When the connector links two clauses already developed, it is common to place a comma before the connector. In fixed-intensity structures such as tan... que, the two parts are normally not separated by a comma. The presence of a comma can also vary with the length of the sentence and the style of the text.
