Idea básica

La concordancia adjectival significa que el adjetivo cambia para coincidir con el sustantivo. Normalmente coincide en género y en número. Así, un sustantivo masculino lleva un adjetivo masculino, y un sustantivo femenino lleva un adjetivo femenino. También, un sustantivo singular lleva un adjetivo singular, y un sustantivo plural lleva un adjetivo plural.

Adjective agreement means that the adjective changes to match the noun. It usually agrees in gender and number. Thus, a masculine noun takes a masculine adjective, and a feminine noun takes a feminine adjective. Also, a singular noun takes a singular adjective, and a plural noun takes a plural adjective.

Género

Muchos adjetivos tienen una forma para masculino y otra para femenino. Con frecuencia, la forma femenina termina en a si la masculina termina en o. Otros adjetivos usan la misma forma para masculino y femenino.

Many adjectives have a form for masculine and another for feminine. Often, the feminine form ends in 'a' if the masculine ends in 'o'. Other adjectives use the same form for masculine and feminine.

Número

El adjetivo también cambia según si el sustantivo está en singular o en plural. En general, el plural se forma con s o con es. La forma exacta depende de la terminación del adjetivo.

The adjective also changes depending on whether the noun is singular or plural. In general, the plural is formed with 's' or with 'es'. The exact form depends on the ending of the adjective.

Formas

Hay adjetivos variables y adjetivos invariables. Los variables cambian en género y número. Los invariables no cambian en género, pero sí pueden cambiar en número.

Varios nombres

Cuando un adjetivo se refiere a varios sustantivos, la concordancia puede depender del género y del número del grupo. Si los sustantivos son del mismo género, el adjetivo suele ir en plural de ese género. Si hay sustantivos masculinos y femeninos, en la norma general el adjetivo suele ir en masculino plural.

When an adjective refers to several nouns, agreement can depend on the gender and number of the group. Colectivos

Con sustantivos colectivos y compuestos, la concordancia no siempre se siente igual para todos los hablantes. Un sustantivo colectivo es singular en la forma, pero puede expresar un grupo. Por eso, en algunos casos se usa concordancia formal con el núcleo singular, y en otros aparece una concordancia más cercana al significado plural.

With collective and compound nouns, agreement is not always perceived the same by all speakers. A collective noun is singular in form, but it can express a group. Therefore, in some cases formal agreement with the singular head is used, and in others a concordance closer to the plural meaning appears.
