Future I describes planned or agreed actions in the future, predictions and suppositions about the present or the future. It is also used for intentions, promises and announcements. In German, the present tense is often used for the future as well, especially in everyday language, whereas Future I in writing and in more formal announcements usually sounds more clearly future.

Future I is formed with 'werden' as the auxiliary verb and the infinitive of the main verb at the end of the clause. The main verb remains unchanged, even if modal verbs occur in the clause. For the base form of 'werden', the present tense of 'Werden' is important, and its function as an auxiliary verb is also visible with auxiliary verbs.

ichI.🔮werdeI will.Ich werde morgen kommen , wenn ich Zeit habe.I will come tomorrow if I have time.
duyou (informal singular).🌟wirstyou will.Du wirst bald verstehen , wenn du weiterliest. You will understand soon if you keep reading.
er, sie, eshe, she, it.🌤️wirdhe/she/it will.Er wird später anrufen , wenn er angekommen ist.He will call later when he has arrived.
wirwe.🚀werdento become.Wir werden morgen reisen , wenn das Wetter gut ist.We will travel tomorrow if the weather is good.
ihryou (plural informal).🎒werdetyou (plural) will.Ihr werdet das Ergebnis sehen , wenn die Prüfung vorbei ist.You will see the result tomorrow when the exam is over.
sie, Sieshe, you.📬werdento become.Sie werden morgen informiert , wenn die Entscheidung gefallen ist.You will be informed tomorrow when the decision has been made.

In Future I, only the auxiliary verb werden is conjugated, while the infinitive of the main verb remains at the end of the sentence. Irregular verbs keep their infinitive form as the main verb, for example sein, kommen and haben. This keeps the forms in Future I grammatically simple, even if the main verb itself is irregular.

SubjektSubject.VerbVerb.BeispielExample.
ichI.🧭werde seinwill be.Ich werde zu Hause sein , wenn du anrufst.I will be at home when you call.
ichI.🚶werde kommenwill come.Ich werde morgen kommen , wenn ich frei bin.I will come tomorrow if I am free.
ichI.🎁werde habenwill have.Ich werde später mehr Zeit haben , wenn die Arbeit endet.I will have more time later when the work ends.

Modal verbs can appear in Future I together with a main verb when expressing a future possibility, intention or necessity. Then werden occupies the second position and the infinitive verb forms move to the end of the sentence. The combination is clear in meaning, even though the present tense is often the simpler form.

IdeeIdea.BeispielExample.
🌠Ein zukünftiger Wunsch kann mit Modalverb ausgedrückt werden.A future wish can be expressed with a modal verb.Ich werde dir helfen können, wenn ich mehr Zeit habe.I will be able to help you if I have more time.
📚Eine zukünftige Pflicht kann mit Modalverb ausgedrückt werden.A future obligation can be expressed with a modal verb.Du wirst das morgen machen müssen, wenn der Lehrer es sagt. You will have to do that tomorrow, if the teacher says so.
🔓Eine zukünftige Erlaubnis kann mit Modalverb ausgedrückt werden.A future permission can be expressed with a modal verb.Sie werden früher gehen dürfen, wenn alles erledigt ist. They will be allowed to leave earlier if everything is completed.

For future references, German very often uses the present tense when the context already makes the future clear. Future I is chosen when a prediction, an assumption, an intention, or a formal announcement should be emphasized more strongly. Compared with the present, Future I therefore often appears more conscious and more written/formal.

IdeeIdea.BeispielExample.
🗓️Das Präsens kann eine geplante Zukunft ausdrücken. The present tense can express a planned future.Morgen fahre ich nach Berlin , wenn der Zug pünktlich ist.Tomorrow I will go to Berlin if the train is on time.
🌧️Futur I kann eine Vorhersage ausdrücken.Future I can express a prediction.Es wird morgen regnen , wenn die Wolken dichter werden. It will rain tomorrow if the clouds become denser.
🤔Futur I kann eine Vermutung ausdrücken.Future I can express a supposition.Er wird schon zu Hause sein , wenn niemand ihn erreicht. He will already be at home when no one reaches him.

Future I differs from Future II in that Future I describes a future action or forecast, while Future II presents an action as already completed in the future. Whoever masters Future I confidently has an important foundation for Future II and also understands why German 'Zukunft' is often not expressed with only a single tense. In connection with modal verbs and with the preterite, these time references can be compared even more precisely.
