Demonstrative pronouns indicate the position of a being, object, idea, or clause in relation to the people involved in the discourse. Like Pronouns, they can function as demonstrative adjectives when they accompany a noun, or as demonstrative pronouns when they replace it. In Portuguese, the choice of form also expresses proximity, distance, and relation to the speaker and the listener.

Como adjetivo demonstrativo, a forma costuma aparecer antes do substantivo que determina. Como pronome demonstrativo, ela substitui o substantivo já mencionado e ocupa o lugar do nome na frase. Quando se unem a preposições, os demonstrativos podem formar contrações como deste, dessa e daquele. Essas formas mantêm o valor de gênero e número do demonstrativo de origem e seguem a regência exigida pela preposição.
