Advice vs Advise
[A2] Learn the difference between advice (noun) and advise (verb) in English. This module explains how to use Advice vs Advise correctly in common contexts.
Advice vs Advise
Advice and advise look similar but function differently in a sentence. Advice is a noun meaning a suggestion or guidance you can receive, give, or follow. Advise is a verb meaning to give a suggestion or to recommend an action. The main learning goal is to choose the correct form by checking whether you need a thing (noun) or an action (verb).
Advice 与 advise 看起来相似,但在句子中功能不同。Advice 是名词,表示你可以获得、给予或遵循的建议或指导。Advise 是动词,意思是提出一个建议或推荐一个行动。主要学习目标是通过检查你需要的是一个东西(名词)还是一个行动(动词),来选择正确的形式。
Choose the correct word: “Can you _____ me on this?”
Parts of Speech
Use advice when you need a noun: it can follow articles like a or some, and it can be the object of verbs like get, give, or take. Use advise when you need a verb: it shows an action someone does, so it can take a subject and often an object. A quick check is to try replacing the word with suggestion; if it fits, you want advice. If you can replace it with recommend, you want advise.
在需要名词时使用 advice:它可以跟在冠词如 a 或 some 之后,也可以作为 get、give、take 等动词的宾语。在需要动词时使用 advise:它表示一个人执行的行动,因此可以有主语,通常也有宾语。一个快速检查是把这个词替换成 suggestion;如果合适,你需要 advice。如果可以替换成 recommend,你需要 advise。

Using Advice
Advice refers to guidance as a thing you can ask for, receive, or follow. It commonly appears after verbs like give, offer, need, want, take, and follow. Because advice is a noun, it can be modified by adjectives like good, helpful, practical, and honest. It often pairs with prepositions like about and on to introduce the topic.
Advice 指的是可以请求、获得或遵循的指导。它通常出现在 like give、offer、need、want、take 和 follow 等动词之后。由于 advice 是名词,它可以被 good、helpful、practical、honest 等形容词修饰。它常与介词 about 和 on 搭配来引出话题。

Using Advise
Advise expresses the action of recommending or guiding. It is typically followed by an object such as someone, a group, or a pronoun, and it can also be followed by to plus a base verb to state the recommended action. You can also advise that plus a clause for more formal statements. Since it is a verb, it changes form for tense and subject.
Advise 表达提出建议或引导的行为。它通常跟随一个宾语,如某人、一个团体,或一个代词,也可以跟随 to 加一个基本动词来陈述被推荐的行动。你也可以使用 that 加从句来表达更正式的陈述。由于它是动词,因此在时态和主语上会变化。
Choose the best completion: “We advise you _____ early.”
Common Patterns
Certain sentence frames strongly signal which word you need. If the structure is verb plus object plus to plus verb, you almost always want advise. If the structure is adjective plus blank or verb plus blank plus about or on, you usually want advice. Learning these frames helps you choose quickly without overthinking.
某些句型能强烈提示你需要哪个单词。如果结构是动词 + 宾语 + to + 动词,那么几乎总是要用 advise。如果结构是形容词 + 空白 或 动词 + 空白 + about on,那么通常要用 advice。学习这些结构能帮助你快速做出选择,而无需过度思考。

Countability
Advice is generally uncountable in standard English, so it does not normally take a plural form in formal writing. Instead of saying an advice, use a piece of advice when you mean one item. You can also use some advice to mean an unspecified amount. In informal speech, you may hear advices, but it is not considered standard.
Advice 在标准英语中通常是不可数的,因此在正式写作中通常不带复数形式。若指一个项目,请使用 a piece of advice。也可以用 some advice 表示不确定数量。在非正式口语中,可能会听到 advices,但这并非标准用法。

Pronunciation
Pronunciation helps you distinguish them in speech. Advice ends with an unvoiced s sound, like ice. Advise ends with a voiced z sound, like eyes. Stress falls on the second syllable in both words. Listening for the final sound is often the fastest way to tell which word you heard.
发音有助于在口语中区分它们。Advice 以无声的 s 音结尾,像 ice。Advise 以有声的 z 音结尾,像 eyes。重音都落在两个单词的第二个音节上。倾听末尾的音往往是最快识别你听到的是哪个单词的方法。

因为 advise 是动词,它会随时态变化,并可出现在常见的动词结构中。基本形式 advise 在第三人称单数现在时变为 advises。过去时和过去分词是 advised。现在进行时是 advising。

Quick Choice
To choose correctly, decide whether you are naming guidance or describing the act of recommending. If you can put the word after the or some, you need advice. If you can add a subject before it and an object after it, you need advise. Use pronunciation as a final check: advice ends in s, advise ends in z.
要做出正确的选择,先决定你是在命名指导(名词)还是在描述推荐的行为(动词)。如果你能把单词放在 the 或 some 之后,你就需要 advice。如果你能在它前面加上主语,在它后面加上宾语,你就需要 advise。作为最终检查,使用发音来判断:advice 以 s 结尾,advise 以 z 结尾。
