Afrosoricidans are members of the order Afrosoricida, a distinctive group of small mammals primarily found in Africa and Madagascar. This order includes tenrecs, golden moles, and otter shrews, all of which share unique adaptations for insectivorous diets and, in many cases, subterranean or semi-aquatic lifestyles. Despite their superficial resemblance to other insectivores, afrosoricidans are more closely related to elephants and aardvarks within the superorder Afrotheria. They exhibit remarkable evolutionary innovations such as specialized sensory organs, reduced eyesight, and versatile locomotion that enable them to thrive in niches ranging from underground burrows to aquatic environments.
