Un, una, unos y unas accompany the noun to present a person, an object, or an idea without identifying it precisely. Veo un perro does not point to a concrete dog known to the speaker and listener; it only indicates that one exists. If the article is removed, the phrase loses that general reference and leaves the noun more bare, less presented in discourse. Compared to el, la, los, las, these articles do not point to something already known, but to something new, not specific or not yet determined.

With masculine singular nouns you use un: un libro, un vecino, un café. With feminine singular nouns you use una: una casa, una mesa, una amiga. The article agrees with the gender of the noun it accompanies, not with the sex of the person nor the meaning of the object. That’s why you say un problema and una solución, although both are abstract nouns. The article goes in front of the noun: un coche, una escuela.

In plural, the masculine is unos and the feminine is unas. They appear in front of the plural noun: unos libros, unas llaves, unos amigos, unas flores. Besides marking plural, they can indicate an approximate quantity. Compré unos tomates does not say exactly how many; it only indicates an indeterminate amount. When the noun is already plural, the article also goes plural and preserves gender agreement: unos problemas, unas ideas.

When something appears for the first time in a conversation or in a text, it is usually presented with an indefinite article. En la cocina había una taza rota. La taza estaba en el suelo. The first time it is introduced as an unidentified thing; later, when it is known which one it is, it becomes a definite article. It is also used when it is not important to indicate exactly which: Busco un hotel cerca de la estación.

Use of first mention and identification
UsageExplanation
🎁Initial presentationWe use a, a, some, and some when we name something for the first time in the sentence.
☂️Unidentified objectWe use these articles when we still do not know which person or thing it is.

Before certain feminine singular nouns that start with stressed a, un is used instead of una: un agua fría, un aula pequeña, un hacha nueva. The article remains masculine only in form, but the noun keeps its feminine gender. It is evident in the elements that accompany it: un agua clara, un aula amplia. In plural the normal feminine form returns: unas aguas frías, unas aulas pequeñas.

In everyday speech, unos and unas can also express approximation. Llegó unos diez minutos tarde indicates an approximate amount, not exact. Vive a unas dos horas de aquí indicates an approximate distance. This value appears a lot with numbers, measures, and countable quantities, and it tends to sound more natural in conversation than in very formal texts. The form changes with the gender of the word that follows: unas veinte personas, unos tres kilos, unas five páginas.
