A voz passiva apresenta a ação a partir de quem a recebe, e não de quem a pratica. Ela é usada quando o foco está no resultado, no objeto afetado ou no processo. Em muitos contextos, a língua também aceita outras formas para evitar repetir o agente ou para soar mais natural.
The passive voice presents the action from the recipient, not from the one who performs it. It is used when the focus is on the result, the affected object, or the process. In many contexts, the language also accepts other forms to avoid repeating the agent or to sound more natural.
A voz passiva é útil quando o agente é desconhecido, irrelevante ou já está claro no contexto. Ela também serve para dar mais destaque ao paciente da ação. Em textos formais, científicos e jornalísticos, esse tipo de construção aparece com frequência, mas em fala cotidiana muitas vezes outras estruturas são preferidas.
The passive voice is useful when the agent is unknown, irrelevant, or already clear in the context. It also serves to give more emphasis to the recipient of the action. A voz passiva analítica é formada com o verbo ser mais o particípio passado do verbo principal. O sujeito da frase passiva corresponde ao elemento que recebe a ação. O tempo verbal aparece no verbo ser, enquanto o particípio indica a ação sofrida.
The analytic passive voice is formed with the verb to be plus the past participle of the main verb. The subject of the passive sentence corresponds to the element that receives the action. The tense is indicated on the verb to be, while the participle indicates the action suffered.

Na voz passiva com ser, o particípio concorda em gênero e número com o sujeito passivo. Por isso, a forma do particípio muda conforme o nome principal da frase. Essa concordância é obrigatória na norma padrão.
In the passive voice with 'to be', the participle agrees in gender and number with the passive subject. Therefore, the form of the participle changes according to the main noun of the sentence. This agreement is mandatory in standard usage.

O agente da passiva indica quem pratica a ação na frase passiva. Em geral, ele é introduzido por por. Em alguns contextos, sobretudo com pronomes interrogativos, também aparece a sequência por quem. Quando o agente não acrescenta informação importante, ele pode ser omitido.
The agent of the passive indicates who performs the action in the passive sentence. In general, it is introduced by 'by'. In some contexts, especially with interrogative pronouns, the phrase 'by whom' also appears. When the agent does not add important information, it can be omitted.

Nem sempre a voz passiva é a única forma possível para destacar o paciente da ação. Em português, muitas vezes a escolha entre voz passiva, construções com se ou formulações impessoais depende do registro e da intenção do falante. Por isso, a passiva pode soar mais formal em alguns contextos, enquanto outras opções parecem mais naturais em outros.
Not always is the passive voice the only possible way to highlight the recipient of the action. In Portuguese, often the choice between passive voice, constructions with 'se' or impersonal formulations depends on register and the speaker's intention. Therefore, the passive may sound more formal in some contexts, while other options seem more natural in others.
