A fox in a green apron approaches you in the grocery store and asks if you need help finding anything. He has been employee of the month three times. He has already spotted three things in your basket he wants to discuss. His name tag reads MARCUS, and it’s pinned neatly above a small silver whistle. He stands beside your cart with the calm confidence of someone who has memorized every aisle in the building and every complaint ever made about the produce section. Behind him, a display of oranges glows under bright lights, and the overhead speakers play soft music that sounds far too cheerful for a conversation this unusual. In your basket sit a jar of pickles, a frozen pizza, and a single lemon. Marcus glances at each item in turn, then gives a thoughtful nod, as if preparing a report. He lowers his voice and says, “Before you head to checkout, I should mention that we have some strong opinions about these choices.” He taps the side of the cart with one paw. “The pickles are fine. The pizza is acceptable. But the lemon suggests a larger plan, and I’d like to understand it.”
