You are halfway up the trail when you come across a sheep standing in the middle of the path holding a small handwritten sign that says “wrong way.” There is no farm nearby. There is no one else around. She seems very certain. When you stop, the sheep lifts its head and stares at you with an expression so calm it is almost managerial. The sign hangs from one woolly foreleg by a frayed piece of string, and the letters are neat, slanted, and unmistakably human. Behind her, the trail splits into two narrow routes: one climbing toward a ridge covered in pale stones, the other disappearing into a stand of dark pines where the air looks colder than it should. A wind moves through the grass, but the sheep does not shift her feet. Then, without making a sound, she turns her head and looks down the path you just climbed, as if waiting to see whether you will obey.
