Telling Dates
Spanish dates typically follow the pattern: el + day + de + month + de + year (optional). The article el is used before the day when mentioning a specific date.
Examples
Years
Years are stated as four digits and can be preceded by de when part of a date. For recent years, pronounce them in two parts (e.g., 1999 as mil novecientos noventa y nueve).
| Spanish Word | English Word | |
|---|---|---|
| mil novecientos noventa y nueve | 1999 | |
| dos mil diez | 2010 | |
| dos mil veintitrés | 2023 |
Ordinal Numbers
Ordinal numbers (primero, segundo, tercero, etc.) are used for things like floors, chapters, and sometimes dates. For days of the month, primero is used instead of uno when it is the first day.
| Spanish Word | English Word | |
|---|---|---|
| primero | first | |
| segundo | second | |
| tercero | third | |
| cuarto | fourth | |
| quinto | fifth |
